James Walker Founder & Coach

Hi, I am the founder and the main Coach of Charnwood Barbell and here is a little about myself.

For the majority of my life I have trained and coached in sport. For a big chunk of my life I played basketball, training and playing at national level. I went to the 2004 Olympics in Athens as a future potential for Beijing 2008, but upon reflection, I didn’t receive the support I needed from my coach to be able to take things further. From this, I realised that I wanted to be a coach. I swore to myself that I would help people progress and realise their full potential. I have been coaching since I was 16 and in the fitness industry since I was 16 18. With 20 years of experience in coaching and training prospects. I have dealt with 1000’s of people and a multitude of different movement patterns.

It was only in 2014 I got into weightlifting. I decided to stop playing basketball and wanted to do something different, then I saw Klokov do a 205kg snatch and decided there and then, I wanted to do that. With no coaches that I could easily access, I self taught. With only 6 months of training on my own, I competed in my first competition. I was taken care on on the day by Sheffield Hallam’s head coach (Dave Hemborough). His passion and spark inspired me and I decided to do the relevant qualifications and started a club. Years, and lots of life experience later, here we are, with Charnwood Barbell.

My personal goals are to get my numbers back to my old personal bests and qualify for Masters British Championships and Masters European championships. Current Personal Bests are 100kg snatch and 125kg clean and jerk.
